Anfield Road

26 years ago today thousands of Liverpool supporters left home and made the journey to South Yorkshire to see their club play Nottingham Forest in an FA Cup semi-final at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough stadium.

96 of them never returned home.

As the fresh inquests into their deaths continue we are limited as to what we can say about what happened that day, or about what happened in the days, months and years that followed, but we can say this:

No mother should have to hear her son died at a football match, no father should find out his daughter lost her life watching a game, no child should have to grow up without their mum or dad because they went to see a cup game. Nobody should have to go through what the survivors went through.

26 years on, as the fight for justice and truth continues, we think of the survivors, we think of the families and friends who lost loved ones, we remember those who spent the last years of their own lives fighting for justice for their children and we remember 96 people who never came home.
